The Harm of Good Intentions

BusinessWorld’s associate editor had a great time in Palawan gazing at indigenous and alien wildlife: bayawaks, mouse deer, zebras, giraffes and of course, turtles. It’s a great celebration of local tourism – but not so ‘eco’. The image of a turtle hatchling in the palm of a human hand was disturbing and spurred this article. Equally disturbing was the good intentions of Club Paradise where hatchlings are kept for a month until they are ‘strong’ enough to resist predators, giving them a better chance for survival.

"Green" Toilets

If we were referring to adjectives for ‘humor’, “green toilet” would seem like a redundancy. But in WWF’s work pushing for integrated coastal management, the promotion of so-called “green toilets” or ecological sanitation has become an effective way of mobilizing communities, and is far from being redundant. And for several good reasons.

Random Thoughts

It was the long way to Boracay.

Instead of getting a plane from Manila, which boasts of Paradise in 35 minutes, I took a big outrigger boat from Batangas Pier to Muelle, Puerto Galera. The passenger boats behind the monumental architectural achievement in the capital city of “ala eh” never really depart on time.

Sustainable Tourism: Oxymoron? by Yeb Sano

In the golden days of coastal tourism, the journey of a thousand miles would have typically been rewarded with a delightful blend of three S’s: sun, surf, and sand. Destinations in tropical coasts offered a paradise that reminds us of a post-card perfect scene of palm tree-lined beaches, talcum-white sand, azure waters, a generous suntan fix, and not to forget a refreshing serving of tropical cocktail.
