A Wall Street Journal article reports that Greenpeace US was subject of an IRS audit last September, possibly spurred by a group called Public Interest Watch (PIW). PIW is a non-profit group that serves as watchdog of other non-profits, with a mission to 'keep an eye on the self-appointed guardians of the public interest'. Seed money to establish PIW in 2002 was from business organizations. Exxon Mobil Corp (oil and gas industry) funded PIW in 2003, the same year PIW began targeting Greenpeace. Apparently also in 2003, Greenpeace had been critical of Exxon Mobil's position that fossil fuels are not the only contributor to climate change.

Elizabeth Kolbert published a book based on her three-part article "The Climate of Man" in the New Yorker last year. Recommend reading them - a thorough explanation for the technical and non-technical on the phenomenon of climate change based on her interviews with scientists and their methods to track the encroachment of global warming. I particularly liked the 'albedo' effect. In her latest brief "Chilling" in the Talk of the Town section she brings out the irony of the US culture which spends tens of millions of dollars tracking climate change only to do nothing about it.
